Protect Your Health. Protect Wildlife.

Joséphine Billeter

LAOS

In 2020 the PCAF was proud to support Joséphine Billeter, a graphic designer and illustrator based in Laos, whose partnership with local NGO Association Anoulak resulted in a bilingual Lao-Eng poster/brochure to raise awareness about the health risks of wildlife consumption.

The poster/brochure is aimed at Lao’s urban wealthy population who see the consumption of wildlife as a special treat, a showcase of prestige or as an alternative to modern medicines. Previous illegal wildlife trade awareness campaigns have focused on its illegality however, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic this campaign emphasises the public health implications of bushmeat consumption.

“The key message of the campaign is; protect wildlife to protect the health of yourself and your family” - Joséphine Billeter.

Association Anoulak, founded in 2014, is dedicated to long-term conservation of biodiversity and community resilience in Laos. Their programs include (1) biodiversity research, (2) anti-poaching patrols, (3) community sustainable livelihoods, (4) conservation awareness, (5) capacity building.

2,500 printed copies of the cleverly illustrated poster (which can be folded into a smaller brochure) are now displayed at strategic locations across Laos including markets and community centres; the poster has also been adopted by a variety of different conservation organisations across the country.
